Call the fire department if you see or smell smoke but do not know where it is coming from or if you cannot shut down the power to that circuit.

 

You should remove power to a circuit that is smoking or sparking at the breaker if possible before you call.

 

If you do not know which breaker you need to shut off, turn off the main breaker or breakers.

Some homes have up to six main breakers in a panel. This is common with GE equipment in older homes.

 

If your home has only a cordless house phone, you will loose your phone service, when you shut off the electrical service.
